As the Israeli parliamentary elections concluded, the coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu edged ahead of the anti-Netanyahu bloc, securing 54 seats compared to 49 for Gadi Eisenkot’s coalition. With over 77% of the vote counted, analysts predict the results will set the stage for intense coalition negotiations, as neither bloc has reached the 61 seats needed for an outright majority.

Political Deadlock and Coalition Challenges

Despite the lead, both blocs face the daunting task of forming a coalition government. Netanyahu, who previously relied on support from ultra-Orthodox parties, now faces skepticism due to his ambiguous stance on exemptions for seminary students. The Supreme Court’s ruling on exemption arrangements has heightened pressure on the government, complicating Netanyahu’s ability to secure the support of ultra-Orthodox leaders.

The Role of Israeli Arab Parties

The Israeli Arab bloc, securing 19 seats, is now a potential kingmaker in the political landscape. Historically excluded from coalition politics, the Arab parties may now play a more active role, as seen in the 2021 inclusion of Ra’am in a governing coalition. However, major Jewish parties remain divided on cooperation with Arab factions, adding complexity to the formation of a new government.

Opposition and Leadership Deadlock

Eisenkot has ruled out serving under Netanyahu, even in a rotation government, and has called for a new leadership candidate within the opposition bloc. The possibility of a minority government remains, though internal opposition to relying on Arab parties could hinder such an arrangement. The political deadlock may ultimately lead to another election, as parties continue to negotiate and maneuver for power.

Netanyahu’s Strategic Position

Netanyahu is expected to play for time, hoping President Isaac Herzog will delay forming a government, allowing him to continue his political strategy. Meanwhile, the U.S. may look to Netanyahu for cooperation in potential military actions against Iran, highlighting the complex interplay between Israeli politics and international relations.
