Italian police have uncovered a violent plot involving secret WhatsApp chats that discussed attacks on law enforcement, arson, and looting across multiple provinces. The investigation, which led to over 150 searches, revealed a network of nearly 230 members planning to assault officers, steal weapons, and set government buildings ablaze.

Secret Chats Lead to Major Search Operation

Investigators discovered a WhatsApp group with over 230 members discussing violent acts against police, including plans to steal their weapons and rob businesses. The group also encouraged members to set fire to government buildings and steal cars, with one message urging, “Hey guys, if we’re going to protest, let’s set fire to a government building.”

During the investigation, police found knives, brass knuckles, an axe with an anti-police inscription, and other weapons. A balaclava and an Under Armour shirt believed to be stolen were also recovered during a search at the home of a teenager involved in the group. The academic, Youseff Siher, a Moroccan scholar in Islamic studies, was arrested and is continuing to exercise his right to remain silent.

Violent Intent and Legal Proceedings Continue

The group chat, which included messages like “Let’s grab one, beat him up and take his weapon,” prompted authorities to execute searches across multiple Italian provinces. Siher’s phone was searched, leading to the discovery of the group and the subsequent raids. The police have not yet commented on the case, but the investigation continues as the legal proceedings unfold.

Broader Implications for Public Safety

The case highlights the growing threat of organized violence and the role of online platforms in facilitating such plots. As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and preventing further acts of violence.
