Over five decades after the disappearance of Melissa Ann Smith, DNA evidence has finally linked the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy to her 1974 murder, allowing investigators to close the case. Smith, the 17-year-old daughter of then-Midvale Police Chief Louis Smith, vanished on October 18, 1974, after meeting a friend at a local pizza restaurant. Her body was discovered by a hunter nine days later in Summit Park near Park City, with an autopsy revealing she had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and strangled.

Breakthrough in Cold Case Solving

Summit County officials announced the breakthrough at a news conference in Park City on the 52nd anniversary of when Smith’s body was discovered, marking the second Utah cold case closed this year through its connection to Bundy. The breakthrough was made possible by new DNA technology acquired by the Utah State Crime Lab in 2023, which allows investigators to reconstruct complete genetic profiles from degraded or mixed samples.

Forensic Science and Dedication Bring Closure

Summit County Attorney Margaret Olson stated that the DNA evidence, when combined with evidence of pattern, motive, means, and opportunity, confirms Bundy’s responsibility for Smith’s murder. Sheriff Kacey Bates noted that while there was speculation Bundy was responsible for her death, the case had never been officially closed. “Advances in forensic science and the dedication of law enforcement have helped provide answers to a case that remained unsolved for over 50 years,” she said.

Family Relief and Historical Significance

Smith’s family was notified of the closure and expressed relief, though they did not attend the news conference. The closure brings a sense of justice to a case that had haunted the community for decades. Bundy, who confessed to killing Smith before his execution in 1989, was convicted of three murders in Florida and executed in January 1989.
