President Donald Trump on Wednesday praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that the leader is in ‘pretty good shape’ following his party’s strong showing in recent elections. Netanyahu’s Likud party emerged as Israel’s largest, securing 26 seats in the 120-member Knesset, though the prime minister remains short of the 61 seats needed to form a government independently.

Netanyahu’s Political Position Strengthened

Despite the strong performance of Netanyahu’s governing coalition, which is projected to secure 53 seats, the prime minister still faces challenges in assembling a governing majority. The deadlock has intensified discussions about a national unity government, with Israeli President Isaac Herzog urging political leaders to avoid another election.

Speaking in a brief interview with Axios, Trump admitted he initially received ‘horror reports’ about Netanyahu’s electoral prospects but noted that the prime minister had fared better than expected. He also hinted that he might consider helping broker a unity government, though he emphasized that no decisions had been made by the Trump administration.

Uncertainty Over U.S. Involvement

An American official later told the Times of Israel that the Trump administration had not decided to intervene in the coalition negotiations, calling reports of specific arrangements favored by Washington as ‘false and premature.’ The official suggested that Trump might wait several weeks before attempting to bring together Netanyahu and opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot, potentially inviting both to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

Meanwhile, the latest provisional election results show that Netanyahu’s coalition is projected to secure 53 seats, compared to 48 for Eisenkot’s opposition bloc. The Arab parties, which nearly doubled their representation, are now seen as potential power brokers in the formation of a new government.

Political Divisions and Challenges

The Arab parties, including the Joint List and Ra’am, are projected to secure a combined 19 seats, up from 10 in the previous Knesset. This increase complicates efforts to form a governing majority, as most Jewish-led opposition parties have ruled out forming a government dependent on Arab factions.

Netanyahu has also faced criticism for his stance on cooperation with the Joint List, accusing some of its lawmakers of supporting Palestinian terrorists and rejecting Israel’s Jewish character. The opposition remains divided on whether to cooperate with Arab parties, with some leaders advocating for greater Jewish-Arab political cooperation.

Despite these challenges, the possibility of a national unity government remains a viable option, offering an alternative to another election. The political landscape in Israel continues to evolve as parties negotiate the path to the next government.
