On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Source,” Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) reaffirmed her support for Democratic Michigan U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, asserting that he “can” and “will” denounce the “dangerous” ads that blame Jews for the cost of groceries and feature Tucker Carlson.

Stevens Calls for Condemnation of Hate Ads

Stevens began by emphasizing that El-Sayed is in a strong position to denounce the harmful ads that have negatively impacted people. She highlighted two specific ads: one that blames Jews for the rising cost of groceries and another that features Tucker Carlson, whom she described as a racist, anti-black, and white supremacist apologist.

“Abdul — and I fully believe he can do this — can denounce Tucker Carlson and denounce antisemitic hate, things that make, particularly, minority communities feel less safe and actually make them less safe,” Stevens said. She explained that blaming Jews for the cost of groceries or healthcare not being affordable is dangerous for Jewish communities, and supporting Tucker Carlson can make people in the Black community feel targeted and unsafe.

Encouraging the Campaign to Call Out Hate

Stevens urged the campaign to shut out hate and call it out, ensuring that people in her coalition feel comfortable coming to the polls. “I want to encourage this campaign to shut out the hate and to call it out and to make people who were in my coalition, right? Make them feel comfortable about coming to the polls, right?” she said.

She reiterated her confidence in El-Sayed’s ability to take a stand, stating, “I know our candidate can do the right thing here. I know that we can disavow blaming Jews for the cost of groceries being high. And I know that we can disavow Tucker Carlson.” Stevens concluded by reiterating her belief that El-Sayed will take these necessary actions.

The remarks come amid growing concerns about the spread of antisemitic and racist messaging in political discourse, with many calling for greater accountability from public figures and campaigns.
