NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has criticized LeBron James for practicing his golf swing during the national anthem before the 76ers’ game against the Knicks in October. Barkley, known for his strong opinions on patriotism and respect, called the act ‘very disrespectful.’

Barkley Defends National Anthem Respect

Barkley emphasized that the national anthem deserves respect, even from athletes who wish to make a statement. ‘This country is not close to being perfect,’ he said, ‘but it’s a great country. You can protest, but you have to do it respectfully.’

Barkley also noted that he does not pay attention to former President Donald Trump’s comments on the issue. Trump had criticized James after cameras captured the basketball star rehearsing his swing during the anthem. The president called James a ‘TOTAL DISGRACE’ and demanded an apology to ‘Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag.’

James’ Controversial Comments on National Issues

James has faced backlash for his comments on national issues, including his remarks about WNBA star Brittney Griner during her detention in Russia. On his show ‘The Shop,’ he questioned whether Griner would want to return to the U.S., sparking criticism from other athletes like Enes Kanter Freedom.

After the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, James wore a shirt reading ‘Do you understand now,’ and made controversial statements about race relations in America. Critics have pointed out the irony of James, who built a $1.4 billion fortune in the U.S., making such remarks.

Barkley’s Consistent Stance on Anthem Protests

Barkley has consistently defended athletes who choose to stand for the national anthem, even during the 2020 wave of protests. ‘If we have a guy who doesn’t want to kneel because the anthem means something to him, he should not be vilified,’ he said.

James’ actions and remarks continue to spark debate, with many questioning the balance between free speech and national respect.
