On Friday, the Houston District Attorney’s Office charged an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent with aggravated assault after a vehicle collision involving a Mexican construction worker. Mario Alberto Morales, an ICE agent, was driving an unmarked black car on October 10 when it struck Miguel Parra Hernandez, a 48-year-old Mexican worker who was running away from law enforcement.
Incident Details and Charges
According to prosecutors, Morales was in pursuit of Parra Hernandez, who was fleeing on foot. Parra Hernandez stepped in front of Morales’ vehicle, resulting in the collision. The incident left Parra Hernandez with a broken leg, and he was later placed in custody. A grand jury indicted Morales on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
DA’s Ongoing Investigations
The case is being handled by Houston District Attorney Sean Teare, a Democrat, who has also been investigating the fatal shooting of a Mexican homebuilder in July. The incident sparked widespread protests in Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city. Teare is also looking into another incident from July 7, where an illegal alien from Mexico attempted to run over an ICE agent before being fatally shot.
According to reports, the fatal shooting occurred during a traffic stop around 6:50 a.m. The illegal alien, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, tried to evade law enforcement, rammed an ICE vehicle, and refused to follow multiple verbal commands. He attempted to run over an ICE agent before being shot and later died from his injuries at a local hospital.
Broader Context
The incidents highlight the complex and often tense interactions between ICE agents and individuals in the country without legal status. The Houston DA’s office has been a focal point of controversy due to its progressive stance and the high-profile cases it has pursued, including those involving immigration enforcement.
