Film critic Tyler Smith, a veteran critic, podcaster, professor, and filmmaker, has launched Jitters, a new streaming service for genre film fans, after a devastating illness left him paralyzed from the neck down. The service, available on Roku and set to expand, offers a curated selection of classic and culturally significant films, including horror, science fiction, and thrillers.

A New Streaming Platform

Jitters, priced at $3.99 per month, is a reasonably priced alternative to major streaming platforms. The platform’s catalog is specifically curated to bring the very best of cinema, or films that influenced film art over time, to consumers. Smith, who has been working on the project since his illness, emphasizes the importance of curation, offering titles like ‘Poltergeist,’ ‘Halloween,’ and ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much,’ while avoiding what he calls ‘the slop’ other streamers serve up.

Life After Illness

Smith contracted West Nile Virus in 2022, which left him paralyzed and unable to breathe on his own. After a month in the hospital, he woke up in a coma, unable to move or talk. Despite his condition, Smith has made progress, with some minor muscle control and improved speech. He currently lives in a long-term care home near his church, where he finds comfort and support.

Art as Solace

Smith believes that art, especially thrillers, can offer a unique solace during difficult times. He explains that films can help people feel less alone by connecting them with others who share similar feelings. ‘Art is a conversation between the artist and the audience,’ he says. ‘Sometimes an audience member is comforted by even the most depressing works of art because in that moment, they realize, ‘Oh, I’m not alone.”

Future Plans

Smith hopes to expand Jitters to include original programming and provide a platform for aspiring filmmakers. He also continues his work as a script consultant and has revived his ‘Battleship Pretension’ podcast with co-host David Bax. Despite the challenges he faces, Smith remains determined and focused on his passion for film.
