Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) appeared uncertain about her legal name when applying for a marriage license in 2009, according to a document shared by the New York Post. The application, dated February 12, 2009, shows her surname was initially written as Omar, then crossed out and replaced with Elmi before reverting to Omar. The document has become a focal point in a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into whether Omar committed fraud by allegedly failing to use her correct legal name and birthdate when obtaining U.S. citizenship in 2000.
DOJ Names Omar as ‘Ilhan Nur Said Elmi’
The DOJ’s court filing refers to Omar as ‘Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,’ suggesting the name Elmi is her true surname. A source familiar with the investigation told the Post that Omar is a fictitious name and that she was born with the last name Elmi, the same as her alleged brother, Ahmed Elmi, whom she purportedly married. The document also includes a question about whether the couple is related by blood or adoption, with both checking ‘no’ on the form.
Marriage Application Raises Questions
The application, which appears to be a certified copy from Hennepin County, Minnesota, shows the initial revision of the name was written as ‘Ilhan Omar Elmi.’ The Post noted that the document has circulated online for years, first published in August 2016 by Alpha News, but has not received much attention from major news outlets. Scott W. Johnson, a retired Minneapolis attorney and long-time investigator into the case, called the situation a ‘red flag,’ emphasizing that ‘questions should be asked,’ and that Omar has never answered them.
Omar Denies Fraud Allegations
Omar has consistently denied the fraud allegations, calling the investigation a ‘racist conspiracy theory’ and a ‘politically motivated smear’ by Republicans and former President Donald Trump. During an interview with MS NOW anchor Chris Hayes, she responded to a question about her relation to Elmi with ‘Not to my knowledge,’ which drew further scrutiny. The Post also noted that the application appears to have been filled out by a single person, with no indication of who completed the form.
