Democrats Silent on Alaska Election Tactics Amid Alleged Voter Confusion
Dozens of Democrats remain silent on Alaska’s contested senatorial race, despite years of criticizing GOP as a threat to democracy.

Dozens of leading Democrats, many of whom have long criticized the GOP and the Trump administration as a ‘threat to democracy,’ have remained silent on a controversial tactic in Alaska’s senatorial race. The issue at hand involves the placement of a second candidate named Dan Sullivan against incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK), which could potentially impact the outcome of the election.
Democratic Silence Amid Alleged Voter Confusion
Fox News reached out to 42 Democratic lawmakers and governors who endorsed Mary Peltola, the opponent of Sen. Dan Sullivan, asking if they would condemn the alleged effort to confuse Alaska voters. None of the contacted Democrats responded, despite the New York Times reporting earlier this week that Peltola’s campaign may have recruited the second Sullivan to draw votes from the Republican incumbent.
Peltola’s campaign has denied any involvement in the strategy, but the lack of responses from Democrats stands in stark contrast to their frequent accusations that the GOP poses a threat to democracy. For instance, Sen. Richard Blumenthal once stated that ‘voter suppression is poisonous, it is toxic to our democracy,’ while Sen. Chris Murphy argued in April 2025 that ‘those of us who believe that the threat to democracy is urgent’ need to ‘act like it.’
Legal Challenges and Democratic Inaction
The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently filed a lawsuit against Alaska election officials, seeking to delay the certification of the Senate election results if Sen. Sullivan loses. The lawsuit claims that votes cast for the decoy Dan Sullivan could have changed the outcome. However, legal experts have warned that the lawsuit faces significant challenges, as it attempts to infer voter intent from anonymous ballots and threatens state sovereignty over elections.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), known for his maverick stance within his party, also did not comment on the controversy. Other notable Democrats who remained silent include Adam Schiff (D-CA), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Elisa Slotkin (D-MI). House members such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) also did not respond.
Only one Democrat publicly condemned the tactic, Iowa’s Rob Sand, who told Fox News that ‘both parties are doing it and neither party should be doing it.’ However, this rare public criticism did not prompt a broader response from the Democratic leadership.
