DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has defended the ongoing federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, calling it a ‘large case’ involving multiple individuals and emphasizing that the Department of Homeland Security is enforcing the law without political bias.
Law Enforcement Focus, Not Politics
In an interview with Fox News, Mullin stated that the investigation is not a political move but a legal matter. He said, ‘We’re enforcing our nation’s laws, and we’re going to do that. We’re not weaponizing. We’re not using political theater on this.’ Mullin added that the Department of Justice is leading the investigation and that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their political affiliations or positions.
Background on the Case
The case centers on Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, which was investigated during the Obama administration. According to the New York Times, the statute of limitations for a potential marriage-fraud case had expired, leading prosecutors to decline pursuing charges. Omar and Elmi were married in 2009 and divorced in December 2017. Omar has denied that Elmi is her brother, despite reports suggesting he may be gay.
Political Backlash and Support
Despite the administration’s stance, more than a hundred Democrats have accused the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department of using the law to target Omar due to her political opposition to former President Donald Trump. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries signed the letter, but many other Democrats, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, did not. Some critics argue that the investigation could influence Omar’s upcoming reelection bid.
Comparisons to Past Investigations
Mullin also pointed to the handling of the Trump administration’s investigations by the Biden DOJ, stating, ‘We’re not the Democrat Party that came after their political enemies like President Trump, and they know they weaponized our DOJ and FBI.’ He criticized the previous administration for using law enforcement as a political tool, calling it ‘shameful.’
