British police have arrested 325 people at a London protest supporting the banned group Palestine Action, ahead of a court appeal over the government’s decision to classify the group as a terrorist organization. The arrests occurred during a demonstration outside the U.S. embassy, which was part of a ‘mass action’ organized by supporters of the group. The Supreme Court in the UK is set to hold a two-day hearing starting Wednesday to review the government’s July 2025 decision to outlaw Palestine Action under anti-terror legislation.
UK and U.S. Designations of Palestine Action
The designation of Palestine Action as a terrorist group by the UK government places it on a blacklist that also includes entities like Hamas. Membership or support for the group is now a crime punishable by up to 14 years in prison. The move has led to over 4,000 arrests, including many senior citizens and Holocaust survivors, according to campaigners and police records.
Meanwhile, the United States also designated Palestine Action as a terrorist organization in August, as part of the Trump administration’s campaign against left-wing movements. The UK and U.S. designations have intensified pressure on the group, with law enforcement agencies actively identifying and arresting individuals who show support.
Protests and Law Enforcement Response
London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that 325 people were arrested, with 320 of them charged under the Terrorism Act for expressing support for a proscribed organization. A smaller number of protesters also gathered outside the U.S. consulate in Edinburgh, Scotland, but no arrests were made there at the time.
Police Scotland stated that investigations are ongoing to identify individuals seen wearing t-shirts and holding banners supporting the banned group. They emphasized that evidence is being reviewed, and further action will be taken as appropriate.
The legal battle over Palestine Action’s designation continues to draw significant public attention, with supporters arguing that the group’s activities are peaceful and focused on advocacy. As the court hearing approaches, the situation remains a focal point for discussions on free speech, national security, and the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties.
