Connecticut State Representative Anne Hughes (D) was arrested after being charged with larceny for stealing campaign signs belonging to her opponent. The theft was uncovered through an Apple AirTag tracker embedded in one of the stolen signs, which led investigators to Hughes’ home.

Investigation and Arrest

The Easton Police Department received a complaint from the Darrell Harris campaign staff about several political signs being stolen from the side of the road near Route 59 and Judd Road. Following an investigation, police discovered that an AirTag tracker had been placed on one of the signs, which was later found on property owned by Hughes.

A follow-up investigation led to Hughes returning several stolen signs, including the one with the AirTag. Police found probable cause to issue Hughes a misdemeanor summons for sixth-degree larceny.

Apology and Statement

After being caught, Hughes posted an apology on Facebook, acknowledging her actions and expressing regret for the distraction caused by the incident. She stated, “Yesterday I removed lawn signs that shouldn’t have been on public property. I apologize for removing them rather than contacting the police or my opponent’s campaign to remove them, and I take full responsibility and accountability for my actions.”

She also emphasized the importance of civil discourse during the campaign season, saying, “Campaigns should be about issues and differences of ideas, not yard signs. I apologize for the distraction, and am committed to having civil discourse with my opponent for the duration of this campaign season.”

This incident has sparked discussions about the appropriateness of political signage and the responsibility of candidates to engage in respectful campaigning. As the election season progresses, the case serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and decorum in political processes.
