President Donald Trump has vowed to become ‘Mr. Veto’ and systematically block Democratic legislation if the left secures a majority in Congress during the upcoming midterms. In a preview of his interview with New York Post columnist Miranda Devine on her ‘Pod Force One’ podcast, Trump emphasized his determination to prevent a Democratic majority from undermining the ‘America First’ policies of his second term.

Strategic Use of Veto Power

“I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto,” Trump said. “I’m not going to let them ruin it.” He outlined a strategy of using the veto aggressively for “a month or two,” stating that Democrats would send bills to his desk, which he would then veto. After repeated rejections, Trump suggested that the opposition would eventually have to make a deal.

“This dynamic wouldn’t be the first time a president has faced an opposition Congress,” he added, “but hopefully we don’t have to worry about that.” This approach is not new, as Trump previously stated in late October that if Democrats took control, “I veto everything, and then the Democrats come and want to make a deal.” He reiterated this stance in the following days, emphasizing his readiness to use the veto to force “strong deals” only if the results of elections are “honest.”

Executive Actions in Preparation

The White House is already preparing for the possibility of divided government, with officials identifying executive actions that can advance the agenda without new legislation. Among the measures under consideration are new tariffs on wind turbines and critical minerals, as well as stricter visa rules for temporary foreign workers and international students.

These steps build on Trump’s existing use of executive authority in trade, immigration enforcement, and regulatory reform. Trump has also previewed the left’s broader goals, stating that Democrats “want to get rid of your Second Amendment, have transgender for everyone.” He echoed warnings that a full Democratic sweep could enable radical structural changes, including adding states, expanding the Supreme Court, and eliminating the Senate filibuster.

Political Strategy and Legal Hurdles

Overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers, a threshold Democrats are highly unlikely to reach even in a strong midterm wave. Trump has used the veto sparingly in his second term, with only two vetoes compared to ten in his first, but he has made clear that restraint will end if the left takes control of Congress.
