Spanish authorities have arrested two individuals allegedly planning violent Halloween riots in Málaga, as part of a broader operation that reportedly thwarted planned nationwide protests. The arrests, made in Fuengirola, mark a significant setback for the Blocus group, which had issued online calls for violent demonstrations inspired by recent unrest in France.
Thwarted Plans and Increased Security
The two detainees, one an adult and one a minor, are believed to be affiliated with Blocus, a group that has been spreading online threats of riots across Spain. According to Cadena SER, Spanish police intercepted the individuals as they prepared for violent actions, which would have involved looting and vandalism in local commercial areas on October 31.
Authorities have charged the detainees with conspiracy to commit public disturbances and property crimes. The arrests followed a series of detentions, with seven individuals already arrested in the region for their alleged involvement in Blocus’ plans. Law enforcement efforts reportedly led to the detention of about 20 individuals across Spain and the identification of over 2,200 people linked to the group.
Impact on Major Cities
The increased police activity prevented riots in key cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Bilbao, as noted by El Español. The newspaper described the outcome as a “total failure” for Blocus, as no major incidents occurred on Halloween night. Meanwhile, German officials acknowledged that violent protests in Germany were driven by members of the migrant community and far-left groups, highlighting the regional differences in the situation.
Despite the absence of major incidents in Spain, the threat of violence prompted heightened security measures, with businesses in major cities taking precautions to protect their properties. The police operation, which included tracking down alleged organizers, has been credited with preventing the anticipated chaos.
