A former Uvalde, Texas, Assistant District Attorney, Erin Benavides, 54, died by suicide on October 14 after a wellness check call led to police being dispatched to her home in Port Aransas. Authorities confirmed the death as a suicide, with no signs pointing to foul play.
Professional Background and Personal Life
Benavides served as an assistant DA in the anti-gang unit and border protection from January 2023 until August 31, 2026. She worked in a state grant-funded position on the Anti-Gang and Border Prosecution Unit. In addition to her legal career, she was a child abuse advocate and caseworker, including as CEO of the Youth Center of South Texas and a member of the Bexar County Child Welfare Board.
Before her legal career, she was married to former San Antonio Spurs athlete Brent Barry. The couple divorced in 2011. Benavides was previously accused of having an “emotional affair” with NBA star Tony Parker.
Recent Circumstances and Discovery
Port Aransas Police Department Lieutenant Joseph Rivas stated that Benavides appeared to be living alone and unemployed at the time of her death, though she was looking for work in the area. She had recently moved, and the house appeared mostly empty. A friend of her current husband, attorney Pablo “Paul” Benavides, called police the evening of October 14 and relayed an alarming text message Erin Benavides had sent 15 minutes prior. By the time police arrived and made a forced entry, Benavides was dead. Rivas said she was found with a single gunshot wound.
The investigation was still pending as of October 28. Rivas said there “doesn’t seem to be anything indicating anything else” other than suicide regarding her cause of death.
