Lowe’s home improvement store has announced the launch of its drone delivery service, marking the first such initiative in the home improvement retail space. The service, which will begin in North Carolina, focuses on delivering lightweight items such as paint, hardware, and some tools. Customers can order products directly through DoorDash, with drone delivery listed as an option for eligible customers.
Partnership with DoorDash and Alphabet’s Wing
The drone delivery service is a collaboration between Lowe’s, DoorDash, and Alphabet’s Wing. According to the company, the new service will provide customers access to over 100 products, with delivery times as fast as 20 minutes. A pilot program is already live in North Carolina, with plans for expansion.
The drones currently transport orders of roughly 2.5 pounds per flight and operate within a 5-mile radius of the store in Matthews, North Carolina. Seemantini Godbole, chief information and artificial intelligence officer at Lowe’s, highlighted the service’s benefits, stating that shoppers often realize midway through a project they are missing a crucial item. Drone delivery, she explained, allows customers to continue their projects without interruption.
Industry Comparisons and Challenges
While Walmart and Amazon have already launched drone delivery services in some states, some customers have reported issues with package damage. In Texas, one Amazon customer described how their drone-delivered package landed in their swimming pool, capturing the moment on video. Despite these challenges, the use of drones for delivery continues to grow, with the Government Accountability Office reporting over 1 million commercial drones were in use in airspace in 2025 for tasks such as delivering goods and surveying land.
Future Expansion and Customer Experience
Lowe’s aims to enhance the customer experience by addressing common pain points, such as the inconvenience of missing essential items during home improvement projects. The company’s drone delivery service is a step toward making home repairs and projects more efficient and less disruptive. As the service expands, it may set a precedent for other retailers in the home improvement sector to adopt similar technologies.
