A U.S. federal judge has sentenced a Chinese national to 12 years in prison for his role in trafficking drugs from Colombia into the United States. The individual, Wenshen Xu, 52, was found guilty of drug trafficking, money laundering, and providing material support to the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), a Mexican cartel designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. government.
Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering Charges
Xu, who lived in Honduras, operated a sophisticated transportation network from 2023 that moved over 450 kilograms of cocaine for Mexican cartels, primarily for CJNG. The network included airstrips, airports, armored cars, and associates across Latin America. Prosecutors alleged that Xu orchestrated a complex money laundering scheme involving cryptocurrency, trade-based money laundering, and encrypted communications, totaling over $22 million in profits.
Arrest and Extradition
Xu was arrested in Guatemala in 2025 after planning a large-scale drug shipment. He was extradited to the United States in January and held until his sentencing hearing. The court ordered him to pay a $22 million judgment as part of the ruling.
Cartel Designation and Legal Context
CJNG, one of seven Mexican drug cartels designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the U.S. government, has been a focal point in international drug enforcement efforts. Xu’s case highlights the growing role of international actors in facilitating drug trafficking and the U.S. government’s efforts to hold them accountable.
Broader Implications for Drug Enforcement
The case underscores the complexity of cross-border drug trafficking networks and the evolving methods used to launder money and move illicit goods. It also reflects the U.S. government’s continued focus on dismantling these networks, even as they operate through sophisticated and globalized operations.
