Footage has surfaced showing a man walking into an unlocked early voting trailer in New Jersey with unattended voting machines and election materials, just an hour before the site was supposed to open. The trailer, located at 10th Street and Summit Avenue, contained two voting machines, electronic poll books, and other election materials, with no staff present at the time.
Hudson County Board of Elections Clerk Michael Harper confirmed the situation to Hudson County View, stating that an electrician servicing the generators for Union City’s 10 early-voting trailers had checked the site around 8:50 a.m. and left the door unlocked by mistake. Poll workers later arrived, noticed the door was open, and reported the issue.
Harper noted that the machines were not replaced and that county officials ran a real-time diagnostic check, confirming that the machines and poll books had not been powered on, Wi-Fi was off, and the vote totals matched the previous night’s recorded numbers. He expressed confidence that the machines remained unmolested, citing password and physical safeguards, including a locked USB port, which would have made casual tampering difficult.

Harper described the video as potentially a “setup” and indicated the trailer was unlocked and unattended for roughly 30 minutes at most, not overnight. He also mentioned that he wasn’t aware of the situation until days after the fact. “That person watched that [electrician] come and go, and to me, the verbiage is so over the top. That person knew they were walking into an empty trailer when they walked in, I have no doubt,” Harper stated.
Despite the incident, Harper confirmed that the county decided to continue using the machines for the remainder of early voting. He added that plans have been put in place in conjunction with Union City City Clerk Hilda Rosario to prevent such an oversight in the future, including adding a city clerk representative to the morning inspection team and assigning a dedicated person to ensure the door is locked properly.
