Former U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has secured a major political victory by defeating Trump-backed Ohio Senator Jon Husted in the U.S. Senate race, flipping Ohio’s Senate seat to blue. With 2,052,321 votes, or 48% of the total, Brown narrowly edged out Husted, who received 1,956,141 votes, or 46%. The race was called by the Associated Press after 88% of votes were counted.

Trump Endorses Husted, But Brown Wins

President Donald Trump had endorsed Husted in 2025, praising his work as a public servant and calling him a ‘wonderful man’ who has ‘always delivered for Ohio.’ Husted, appointed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to serve out the remainder of Vice President JD Vance’s term, was seeking his first full term as a U.S. Senator. Had Husted won, it would have marked the beginning of his tenure in the Senate.

Husted’s Priorities: Lower Costs, Manufacturing, and Immigration

Husted’s campaign focused on reducing living costs, a key issue for Ohioans. He founded InnovateOhio to cut costs and eliminate government waste, and he promoted Ohio as the ‘least costly state in the Midwest to start and maintain a business.’ As secretary of state and House speaker, he also led efforts to deliver what was then the largest income tax cut in Ohio’s history.

Husted supported American manufacturing and plans to expand technical and workforce training for young Americans. He also advocated for strong immigration enforcement, border security, and efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking. His campaign received endorsements from Ohio Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy and U.S. Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

Brown’s Focus: Affordability and Drug Pricing

Brown, who served in the U.S. Senate from 2007 to 2025, also prioritized affordability, stating he would support tax cuts for working families. His campaign highlighted his efforts to cap the cost of insulin and reduce prescription drug prices for Ohio seniors after ‘drug companies jacked up prices.’

On his campaign website, Brown stated, ‘Let’s make it illegal for drug companies to charge Americans more than they do in other countries, because the same pill should be the same price,’ echoing the Trump administration’s Most Favored Nation drug pricing efforts.
