Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente has resigned from his post following a deadly train crash in Urda that killed 69 people, marking a significant political development in the country. Puente presented his resignation before the Spanish Congress on Tuesday, almost a week after the tragic incident.

Resignation Amid Political Pressure

Puente stated that his resignation was an act of ‘political dignity,’ asserting that a minister ‘cannot remain in office’ after Spain suffered two deadly train accidents this year. The recent crash in Urda, Toledo, was the second such incident, following a separate accident in January that killed 46 people.

Puente appeared before Congress for a hearing on the recent Urda train accident, which lasted about four hours. During the hearing, he rebutted calls from lawmakers from the anti-mass migration VOX party and the center-right People’s Party (PP) for his resignation and to take responsibility for the tragedy. However, he announced his resignation in the final minutes of the hearing at around 09:08 p.m. (local time).

Political Implications and Election Impact

Puente also announced that he is withdrawing his name from the PSOE’s lists in Valladolid for the upcoming November 29 snap elections. Spanish Equality Minister Ana Redondo will replace Puente in the socialists’ Valladolid list, although Puente’s name will still appear on the ballot as the electoral material has already been printed.

Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed support for Puente on social media, praising his decision as an act of dignity and respect for the victims. A replacement for Puente is expected to be announced by the Spanish government on Wednesday, November 4.

Political Climate and Election Outlook

A recent poll indicates that the Urda train tragedy has further hindered the chances of the Sánchez administration to stay in power in the upcoming snap elections. A coalition between the PP and VOX is highly expected to secure an absolute majority that will allow it to form a new government.
