President Donald Trump expressed disappointment with the performance of Republican candidates in the midterm elections, stating that he believed they would have done better. Speaking on Fox News Channel shortly after Democrats secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, Trump acknowledged the significant shift in power but did not view it as a personal defeat.

Disappointment in GOP Performance

“Well, I’m a little bit surprised. I thought they’d do better. We had tremendous rallies,” Trump said, reflecting on the election night results. He noted that he had expected his campaign momentum to carry over to the candidates, although it did not translate into victories in several key races.

Expressions of Sympathy

Trump also expressed sympathy for South Carolina Senator Darline Graham, who assumed her post in August following the unexpected passing of her brother, late Senator Lindsey Graham. He highlighted the emotional toll of the loss, emphasizing the personal impact of the event.

Potential for Cooperation

When asked about working with Democrats over the next two years, Trump emphasized his ability to override any legislation passed by Congress using his presidential veto power. However, he made it clear that cooperation would be limited to certain areas, excluding policies he deemed radical.

“Now, could I work with them on an open border? I don’t think so. Could I work with them on certain other things? And could I work with them on men playing… in women’s sports? No, I don’t think so. I mean, I don’t think men should be playing,” Trump stated, reinforcing his stance on key issues.

View on Democratic Intentions

Trump also suggested that Democrats had been seeking this outcome for over a decade, although he did not see the election results as a direct reflection of his leadership. His remarks underscored the political dynamics at play and the ongoing challenges facing the Republican Party in the wake of the midterm losses.
