Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) expressed gratitude to his ‘Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’ following his narrow victory in the state’s gubernatorial race. Donalds, who will replace term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), defeated Democrat David Jolly in a closely contested race, with over 95 percent of the vote counted and a lead of just 1.3 percentage points — a difference of less than 108,000 votes.
Victory Speech Highlights Redemption and Commitment
During his victory speech, Donalds began by thanking Jesus Christ, emphasizing his 30 years in Florida as a journey of ‘redemption’ and connection with people he met over the years. He also sent a direct message to President Trump, declaring that Florida remains ‘red’ despite the national political shift.
Donalds acknowledged DeSantis’ leadership and pledged to ‘make sure that Florida remains the very best state in all of America.’ He also promised to ‘make life in Florida more affordable,’ focusing on safer streets and investment in young people to ‘attain the Florida Dream.’
Republican Success in Florida Amid National Democratic Gains
Donalds’ victory comes alongside Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), who won her Senate race against Democrat Angie Nixon, a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. This marks Florida as one of the few bright spots for Republicans on election night, as Democrats swept the country, taking back both the House and Senate.
Donalds concluded his speech by thanking Florida and the nation, declaring, ‘God Bless you, God Bless Florida, and God Bless America.’ His win underscores the continued influence of conservative policies in the state, despite the broader national trend favoring Democratic candidates.
