President Donald Trump warned Wednesday that Democrats could field formidable candidates for the 2028 presidential election, though he declined to name them, citing concerns over their public profiles. Speaking with Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum the day after Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress, Trump emphasized that some potential contenders are being overlooked.
Trump Avoids Naming Candidates
“I’d rather not say because I actually know some that I think would be formidable, but I don’t want to put them in play,” Trump said. “People aren’t even thinking about them.” The remark comes amid a significant shift in congressional control, with Democrats securing a majority in both the House and Senate following the recent midterm elections.
Republican Leadership Transition
Trump also addressed the future of the Republican Party, noting that the party will need to select a successor to his term-limited presidency in 2028. When asked about the possibility of an open primary, he said the process would be “somewhat of that.” “They say ‘whoever Trump endorses is gonna win,’ or ‘whoever Trump picks is gonna win,'” he added. “I don’t know if that’s true or not.”
Potential Candidates Highlighted
Trump pointed to Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other unnamed figures as potential Republican candidates. “We have a great bench,” he said. “We have a great group of talented people that I think would do a very good job.” While Vance has been widely discussed as a potential candidate, Trump has not formally endorsed a successor.
Political Landscape After Midterms
Tuesday’s election results leave Republicans preparing for the next presidential election while confronting a Democrat-controlled House and Senate for Trump’s final two years in office. Democrats flipped Senate seats in several states Trump carried in 2024, signaling a significant shift in the political landscape. As the party recalibrates, Trump’s comments underscore the growing uncertainty in the race for the 2028 presidential nomination.
