West Hollywood has become the latest city to officially recognize throuples and foursomes, with a new domestic partner registry that allows three or more adults to legally register their relationships. The ordinance, introduced by Mayor John Heilman, enables individuals to file paperwork with the city clerk to record their consensual, non-blood-related relationships. Registration is open to people regardless of whether they live in the city.

Legal Protections for Registered Partners

The new law extends certain legal protections to registered partners, requiring healthcare facilities and city-operated jails to recognize their visitation rights. It also provides housing protections by preventing landlords from terminating or refusing to renew a lease when a partner remains in the rental property. Attorney Christina Fialho, founder of the bisexual media group Rewrite the BiLine, described the law as ‘just the beginning’ and noted that it ‘makes it possible for people to dream about a future they once thought was out of reach.’

Not a Full Legal Status

The new registry does not grant the full legal status of marriage or a state-registered domestic partnership. It also does not automatically grant inheritance rights, tax benefits, or employer health insurance coverage, which are still governed by state and federal law. California’s bigamy statutes and the two-person limit on official domestic partnerships still constrain what the city ordinance can accomplish.

Part of a Broader Trend

West Hollywood is not the first city to support polygamous relationships. Earlier this year, Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts, allowed multi-partner domestic partnership registration. Berkeley and Oakland, California, have also adopted similar anti-discrimination rules covering ‘family structure.’ The West Hollywood ordinance takes effect in 30 days.
