Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), has lost his seat in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District to Democrat Richard N. Ojeda II. The election results, reported by the Associated Press, show Ojeda securing 138,707 votes, or 51.1 percent of the total, while Hudson received 132,692 votes, or 48.9 percent.
A Shift in a Longtime GOP Stronghold
The 9th District has been a Republican stronghold since 1963, according to NBC News, which noted that the NRCC is the official party organization tasked with maintaining the House majority. Hudson’s defeat marks a significant shift in a district that has historically favored the GOP.
Hudson Acknowledges Loss, Expresses Faith
In a statement, Hudson acknowledged the outcome, saying, “The voters of North Carolina’s 9th District made their choice.” He added, “God is sovereign over my life, and He has a plan for all of us.” Hudson continued to praise America as “the greatest country” and vowed to “keep fighting for the principles that make the United States great.”
Ojeda’s Background and Campaign
Ojeda, who ran on a platform of service and community, emphasized his military background. According to his campaign website, he spent 24 years in the U.S. Army, serving tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti. After retiring, he moved to West Virginia to be near his aging parents and taught JROTC at a local high school.
A New Era for the District
Ojeda celebrated the victory on X, stating, “WE JUST UNSEATED THE CHAIR OF THE NRCC. IT’S A NEW DAY IN AMERICA.” The win signals a potential realignment in the district, with a Democrat now representing a long-standing Republican district. The outcome could have broader implications for the NRCC and the GOP’s strategy in upcoming elections.
