Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has warned that the Republican Party’s recent election losses mark a ‘close to an extinction level event’ for the party, following Democrats’ sweeping gains in the House and Senate. During a press conference in Tallahassee on Wednesday, DeSantis highlighted the dramatic shifts in key states, particularly Texas, where the GOP suffered significant setbacks.

Republican Defeats in Texas

DeSantis pointed to Texas as a major loss for Republicans, noting that the state’s Democratic candidate, James Talarico, won the U.S. Senate race, while Governor Greg Abbott (R) was defeated by Texas State Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D). DeSantis warned that without Texas as a key state, the Republican Party could lose its national viability.

“Let’s just be clear about what happened last night: This is close to an extinction level event for Republicans in many parts of the country, as we have seen probably in the last hundred years,” DeSantis said. “In January, when everyone in office leaves, of the 10 largest states in this union, only one state will have Republican control of their state — the state of Florida.”

Impact of Losing Texas

DeSantis emphasized that Texas has long been the crown jewel of Republican politics, surpassing other states in its influence. He warned that the loss of key statewide races, including the governor, attorney general, and multiple Supreme Court justices, could have long-term consequences for the party.

“If the Republican Party doesn’t have Texas as an anchor, we are not going to be viable nationally going forward,” DeSantis added. “That is going to hurt, not just for the next two years, that’s something that can reverberate for the next decade or more.”

Analysis of GOP Losing Ground

Vice President JD Vance shared insights from pollsters, indicating that many Trump 2024 voters were disillusioned and planning to vote for Democrats. He cited issues like ending the war, addressing inflation, and putting America first as key factors in winning back those voters.

“The real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone,” Vance said. “Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this.”

President Donald Trump also expressed surprise at the GOP’s poor performance, stating that he was “surprised” that Republican candidates didn’t do better in the midterms.
