China’s state-run Global Times has seized on the recent U.S. midterm elections to argue that the ‘myth’ of Western-style democracy is losing its appeal, even in the West. The editorial frames the growing disillusionment with democratic systems as a reflection of their inherent flaws, suggesting that Western citizens no longer believe their votes lead to meaningful change.

Public Cynicism Sparks Debate

Supporting its argument, the Global Times cited public opinion polls showing widespread dissatisfaction with how democracy functions in Western countries. According to a Pew Research Center survey, over 60% of citizens in France, Spain, Italy, and the U.S. express dissatisfaction with the current state of democracy. Similar findings were echoed by Ipsos and Gallup, which noted a trend of increasing cynicism toward democratic institutions.

Democratic Erosion and Institutional Corruption

The Global Times attributed this skepticism to the failure of existing democratic institutions to effectively address public needs. It also pointed to the rise of institutional corruption within political processes, which it claims further exposes the weaknesses of Western democratic systems.

Despite its criticism, the editorial did not explicitly call for the adoption of China’s single-party model. Instead, it focused on discouraging Western criticism of China’s governance structure, emphasizing the importance of tailoring democratic systems to local contexts.

Democracy’s Flaws and the Path Forward

The Global Times’ critique draws a parallel to Winston Churchill’s famous observation that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried. While the editorial highlights growing dissatisfaction with the current state of democracy, it does not offer a clear alternative, leaving open the question of what the Chinese people might do with the freedoms that the Global Times finds so unappealing.
