The incident occurred on a late October afternoon at Bagel Dock Express in Southport, North Carolina, after the restaurant had closed. The young alligator, native to the region, entered through an open back door, navigated through the stockroom and kitchen, and eventually settled in the public area of the eatery.
Store owner Jesse Driscoll, who had been occupied with installing a new oven, was caught off guard when he discovered the reptile near the service counter. He immediately retreated several yards, then called for help and summoned another man to assist in the discovery before contacting 911.
Safe Removal and Owner’s Response
Southport Police and Animal Protective Services arrived quickly to safely remove the alligator. Driscoll, while surprised by the encounter, used the situation as an opportunity for promotion. He shared the footage on Facebook, captioning it with a humorous twist: ‘Apparently, word of our fresh bagels has made it way into the swamp.’
Driscoll emphasized that the situation was harmless, with no injuries or drama. ‘It was a shock to see me as I was him,’ he remarked, highlighting the unusual nature of the event.

Alligators are native to the North Carolina coast, and while such encounters are rare, they are not unheard of. Southport, located about 60 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, is a coastal town where wildlife interactions can occasionally occur.
