Minnesota’s U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has secured her reelection bid for the state’s Fifth Congressional District, winning with over 76% of the vote. With 100% of the ballots counted in Tuesday’s election, Omar defeated her Republican opponent, John Nagel, by a significant margin, according to the Associated Press.

Victory and Celebration

Omar expressed her gratitude to voters on social media, stating, “Thank you, Minnesota! I’m incredibly honored to continue to represent you in the People’s House with a resounding mandate. We will not allow Trump to silence us.”

In a subsequent post, she highlighted the broader Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) wins across Minnesota, including flipping the state House and Senate and securing a DFL trifecta. “Our team organized up and down the ballot across Minnesota and the country to elect leaders who will fight for working people. And today, we’re celebrating what that organizing made possible,” she said.

Recognition of Other Wins

Omar congratulated several Democratic candidates, including Governor-elect Amy Klobuchar, Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan, and Attorney General Keith Ellison in Minnesota, as well as Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. “This is what people-powered organizing look like. When working people come together, organize, and refuse to give up, we can change the direction of our country,” she added.

Focus on Justice and Accountability

Omar also emphasized the need for justice and accountability, stating, “We’re getting justice and accountability for every single Minnesotan who’s suffered under Trump’s terrorization of our state. Our time is now.”

Despite her victory, Omar has faced scrutiny over allegations of using a false name and her immigration status. A federal court filing mentioned her by her alleged real name, “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Additionally, her home was raided by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) on October 12th, and federal prosecutors have indicated ongoing investigations into her immigration status and financial disclosures.
