Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) celebrated Michigan Democrat Abdulrahman El-Sayed’s Senate victory, marking a significant milestone for Muslim representation in Congress. Omar congratulated El-Sayed on his win over Republican Mike Rogers in Tuesday’s U.S. Senate election, noting that eight Muslims will now serve in the next Congress.
From ‘Inshallah’ to ‘Alhamdulillah’
Omar shared a message expressing her pride in the achievement, writing, “You turned that inshallah into alhamdulillah.” The Arabic phrase “inshallah” means “God willing,” while “alhamdulillah” translates to “praise be to God.” She also took a subtle jab at those who doubted their ability to succeed, though she did not name any specific individuals.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude knowing that we will now have 8 Muslims serving in Congress,” Omar added. “They told us we couldn’t speak up, couldn’t challenge the status quo, and couldn’t make it this far. But we did. Alhamdulillah.”
El-Sayed’s Victory and Political Stance
The Associated Press called the Michigan Senate race at 2:27 a.m. ET Wednesday. By 5:23 p.m. ET, El-Sayed had secured 52.5 percent of the vote to Rogers’ 45.5 percent, with about 98 percent of votes counted. The win keeps retiring Sen. Gary Peters’ seat in Democratic hands in a state President Donald Trump carried in 2024.
El-Sayed defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the August Democratic primary with the support of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). He has been a vocal advocate for a government-run health insurance system and has described Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide.
Historical Context and Implications
El-Sayed’s victory is notable as it continues the trend of shifting political dynamics in key states. His win adds to the growing representation of diverse voices in Congress, reflecting broader changes in American politics. With the Democratic Party maintaining its hold on Michigan’s Senate seat, the state remains a crucial battleground in national elections.
