European airlines face chaos as bomb threats target multiple flights, with no explosives found in security checks.

European airspace was thrown into turmoil on Thursday as at least 14 passenger jets were subjected to bomb hoax threats, prompting fighter jets to scramble and escort planes to safety. The incidents marked the third wave of such disruptions this week, with authorities scrambling to investigate the mysterious attacks.
Flights Diverted, No Explosives Found
Aer Lingus Flight from Dublin to Rome was abruptly diverted and escorted by French military aircraft to Évreux air base, while Finnair Flight 1761 from Helsinki was intercepted and landed in Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. Bomb squads searched the aircraft but found nothing. Similarly, Ryanair flights bound for Sofia, Bulgaria, and Prague were among those targeted, with some diverted to alternative destinations.
Shadowy Group Claims Responsibility
A shadowy group calling itself the ‘Fighters of the Male State’ took credit for the threats against two Rome-bound flights. The group sent an email to a Belgian baggage company operating at Fiumicino Airport, condemning a ‘feminist regime.’ The message warned, ‘Your feminist regime will remember this forever.’
Authorities Scrutinize Threats
Despite the extensive security checks, no explosives were discovered. British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander condemned the threats as ‘malicious hoaxes.’ However, Czech police noted the low credibility of the threats, while European officials remain cautious about linking the incidents to a coordinated campaign.
Uncertainty Over Links to Foreign Actors
Some security analysts suggest the incidents may be part of a ‘hybrid’ attack strategy, potentially linked to foreign actors like Russia or Iran. However, the European Union has not yet confirmed any such connections. E.U. Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized that it is ‘too early to draw conclusions’ on whether the incidents are related.
