President Donald Trump has reportedly been discussing the possibility of firing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth with his advisers in the wake of significant Democratic victories in the midterm elections. Several sources confirmed to CBS News that Trump has been calling multiple advisers about Hegseth, with some White House aides suggesting that part of the blame for the election losses may be attributed to military leaders involved in the Iran War.

Advisers Weigh In on Responsibility

Some White House aides predict that the blame for the midterm losses could be placed on Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, who played key roles in the guidance during the Iran War. However, other sources indicated that Trump has not entirely decided to replace Hegseth.

Trump and Vance Acknowledge Iran War’s Impact

Both Trump and Vice President JD Vance have acknowledged that the Iran War contributed to their losses in the midterms. Speaking with reporters, Trump stated that he is not considering replacing Hegseth, asserting that he is doing a very good job. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly also reaffirmed the president’s confidence in Hegseth.

Midterm Results and Voter Concerns

Republicans suffered massive defeats in the midterms, with Democrats gaining 54 Senate seats and flipping over 35 House seats. According to a CNN exit poll, a majority of voters cited the Iran War and high gas prices as factors in their decision. Over 87% of voters expressed concern about gas prices, with 59% very concerned and 28% somewhat concerned.

War’s Role in Voting Decisions

Of those polled, 74% said the Iran War was either a crucial or major factor in how they voted. These findings highlight the growing public sentiment that the war has had a significant impact on the political landscape, further complicating the administration’s post-election strategy.
