Democrat Nathan Johnson, a former composer for the iconic anime series ‘Dragon Ball Z,’ has been elected as Texas’ next attorney general. Johnson, 58, won the majority of votes in nearly all of Texas’ border districts and major cities in his race against Republican Mayes Middleton.
From Anime Composer to Attorney General
Johnson’s background in music and entertainment is as unique as his political career. Before entering politics, he was a composer for the acclaimed anime series ‘Dragon Ball Z,’ which ran from 1989 to 1996. He composed the musical scores for 67 episodes and five movies, a feat that has earned him a dedicated fan base.
Johnson shared a heartfelt post on Facebook, reminiscing about his time working on the show. ‘If you grew up watching ‘Dragon Ball Z,’ you might know me better than you think: I composed the musical scores for 67 episodes and five movies and had a great time doing it,’ he wrote. He also recalled moments with his young son, who would sit on his knee during intense battle scenes, exclaiming, ‘Oh, Daddy, Goku!’ as the show’s lead character fought off space invaders.
Johnson’s work on ‘Dragon Ball Z’ provided him with a creative outlet and a cultural connection that few people had the opportunity to experience. According to the IMDb database, he was credited as the composer for dozens of episodes between 1990 and 2008. He also worked as a voice actor on the ‘Berserk’ anime films, further cementing his place in the anime community.
A Political Career with a Unique Background
Johnson is a seasoned litigator with degrees in physics and law, and has been a state senator in Texas since 2019. He will take over the role of attorney general from Republican Ken Paxton, who lost to Democrat James Talarico in the race for a U.S. Senate seat despite President Donald Trump’s vocal support.
Johnson’s election marks a significant shift in Texas politics, as he becomes the first person with a background in anime composition to hold such a high-ranking state office. His unique blend of legal expertise and artistic talent highlights the diverse paths that can lead to public service.
