Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has clarified that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is not a MAGA supporter, reaffirming that Italy maintains a strong and unchanged alliance with the United States despite the recent midterm election results.

Clarifying Relations With the U.S.

Tajani, speaking with Italy’s Il Messagero, stated that the results of the U.S. midterm elections do not alter the relationship between Italy and America. He emphasized that Italy views the U.S. as a key ally and the largest democracy in the world, highlighting the importance of maintaining a strong partnership.

“Being allies means being friends who look their counterparts in the eye with their backs straight and their heads held high,” Tajani said. He added that Italy respects the will of the American people and the results of the election, regardless of whether the Republicans or Democrats won.

Distancing From Trump

Tajani explicitly stated that Italy is not a Trumpist nation and that Meloni has consistently rejected Trump’s policies. “We’ve never been Trumpists. Not even Meloni is a MAGA supporter,” he said, noting that he is a “Berlusconian,” referencing the late Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his Forza Italia party.

He also mentioned that he had canceled a planned visit to the U.S. due to Trump’s remarks about Meloni, further distancing Italy from the former president’s influence.

Italy’s Political Stance

Tajani emphasized that the U.S. midterm results do not affect the balance of power in Italy. He noted that the current Italian government has worked well with both former President Joe Biden and his Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.

“Our point of reference, the European People’s Party’s point of reference in America, is the Republican Party,” Tajani said. “Having ties with Republicans doesn’t mean being a Trump supporter.”

PM Meloni’s Silence

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has not publicly commented on the U.S. midterm results, focusing instead on other domestic matters. On Thursday, she chose to address Armed Forces Day instead of commenting on the elections.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini suggested that the midterms were influenced by factors such as international tensions and rising living costs, with hopes that the results could signal a move towards peace.
