Michael Alfonso, the 26-year-old son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has become the youngest member of the next Congress and the first person born in the 2000s to hold office. Alfonso won the open seat race for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday, securing 56 percent of the vote against Democrat Fred Clark, who received 44 percent, according to the Associated Press.

A New Voice in Congress

Alfonso will succeed Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, who ran for governor but lost, in a heavily Republican district that President Donald Trump carried by more than 22 percentage points in 2024. His campaign, aligned with the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, has positioned him as a fresh face in politics, representing the concerns of Gen Z voters.

Healthcare and Healthier Choices

Alfonso has been vocal about the rising costs of healthcare, emphasizing the need for a national conversation on the issue. In a July interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation, he expressed his belief in the MAHA movement and outlined his support for local farmers and alternative food dyes such as Red Dye 40. He specifically mentioned natural cranberry dyes as a potential solution, noting that Wisconsin, his home state, produces 60 percent of the nation’s cranberry supply.

Political Momentum and MAHA Success

Alfonso was one of 24 candidates endorsed by MAHA Action during the 2026 election cycle. As of Thursday, he is among only eight who have won their races, highlighting the movement’s growing influence. His victory has been seen as a significant win for the MAHA movement, which aims to address public health and wellness concerns across the country.

Healthcare Concerns Drive Midterm Voters

According to an NBC News exit poll, 59 percent of 2026 midterm voters were “very concerned” about healthcare costs, with 67% of this group backing Democratic candidates. Alfonso’s focus on healthcare and his advocacy for healthier food options align with the priorities of many voters, particularly younger generations.
