As more of the closest races from Tuesday’s elections are counted, the results show just how strong the blue wave really is. While it was clear by the next morning that Democrats had taken both the U.S. House and Senate, many races have yet to be called. At the time of publication, the Associated Press had called 247 House seats for Democrats and 153 for Republicans, along with 54 Senate seats for Democrats and 44 for Republicans.

Key Democratic Gains in Key States

Some of the latest Democratic pickups are in North Carolina, Virginia, and Arizona, as voters push back against the GOP and its leader, President Donald Trump, according to Politico. Three of the four seats Democrats won in North Carolina districts affected by Republican-initiated redistricting flipped from red to blue, Politico reported. The victories included those of Democrats Cyril Jefferson, Paul Barringer, and Lakesha Womack.

All eight North Carolina districts called by the Associated Press went to Democrats, while Republicans led in only four of the six districts still being counted. The Democratic lead was further reinforced Thursday after the Associated Press projected Amish Shah’s victory in Arizona, flipping a Republican-held seat contested by former NFL kicker Jay Feely.

Notable Wins and Shifts

In Virginia, Democrat Shannon Taylor ousted Republican Rep. Rob Wittman, who had been in office since 2007. Democrat Sam Forstag also became the first Democrat in decades to win a House seat in Montana, according to Politico.

Many House races have yet to be called by the Associated Press, but Democrats lead in most of them as they hold a comfortable House majority. In the Senate, the Associated Press has called seven seats flipped to Democrats. The only two remaining races are both tight contests for Republican-held seats in Alaska and Mississippi, where Democrats are leading.

Broader Implications of the Blue Wave

A similar map shows five governorships flipping to Democrats, with Democrats also leading in the two remaining races in Kansas and Alaska. The results signal a significant shift in political power, with voters clearly expressing their preference for Democratic candidates in key battleground states.
