Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) has officially launched his campaign for the House Republican Conference chair, accusing current leadership of failing to deliver on conservative promises and prioritizing Washington interests over voter commitments. In a statement released Thursday, Steube argued that the party’s election losses were not due to being too conservative, but rather because of broken promises and a lack of resolve in pursuing conservative policies.

Calling for Change

“Republicans didn’t lose because we were too conservative. We lost because we failed to deliver on the conservative policies we promised,” Steube wrote in his announcement. He emphasized his commitment to moving the party in a new direction, stating, “I’m not interested in preserving the status quo. I’m stepping forward to give Members a conservative choice and take our Conference in a new direction.”

Leadership Contest Heats Up

Steube’s bid comes amid a competitive race for the leadership position, which includes incumbent Conference Chair Lisa McClain (R-MI) and Rep. Erin Houchin (R-IN). McClain is seeking re-election, while Steube and Houchin are vying to replace her. The contest is part of a broader reshaping of the party’s leadership following the loss of the House majority.

Accusations of Compromise

In a letter to colleagues, Steube criticized Republican leaders for putting Washington’s demands ahead of their commitments to voters. He argued that conservatives who raised concerns about the party’s direction were often ignored. “The priorities of Washington took precedence over the commitments we made to the voters who put us here,” he wrote. “Conservatives who raised concerns about our direction were too often ignored.” He added that the election results should have made it clear that this approach has failed.

Push for a New Direction

Steube’s campaign letter emphasized the need for a comprehensive change in the party’s approach, stating that simply altering the message would not be enough. He argued that the conference chair must have a deep understanding of Republican policies and the conviction to explain their importance to voters. “I understand that serving as Conference Chair requires more than managing a communications operation,” he wrote. “It requires an understanding of the issues and the conviction to explain why they matter.”

Public Demand for Leadership Change

Steube’s campaign follows a public demand he made earlier this week for Republican leaders in both chambers to step aside, accusing them of yielding to moderates and failing to act on conservative warnings. His call for change has intensified as the party faces the challenge of rebuilding its influence in the wake of recent election losses.
