The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has suspended its operations in Florida following the state’s designation of the organization as a domestic terrorist group. The decision came after a federal judge ruled against temporarily blocking the designation, which was imposed by Florida officials under new state laws.
CAIR-Florida announced on its website that the indefinite suspension of operations was a result of what they described as ‘baseless and unconstitutional enforcement’ of the state’s new laws. The designation, which took effect on Thursday, was officially made by Governor Ron DeSantis and his Cabinet on September 29.
Attorney-General James Uthmeier called the ruling a ‘great win’ for Florida, emphasizing the state’s efforts to protect its citizens. CAIR argued that the label violates their First Amendment rights and the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, claiming it is an unconstitutional act.
Ashley Gorski, senior counsel for the ACLU National Security Project, stated that Florida officials have been ‘relentless in seeking to silence our clients’ civil rights work and advocacy,’ according to FOX News 13. The organization was one of 90 groups labeled as domestic or international terrorist organizations by the DeSantis-led Cabinet.
Other groups included in the designation are the Muslim Brotherhood, the Venezuelan crime syndicate Tren de Aragua, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, and the anti-fascism movement known as antifa. The state’s actions have sparked significant debate over the implications of labeling organizations as terrorist entities and the potential impact on civil liberties and free speech.
