Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) defended his approach to social issues during a recent interview on CNN’s “The Arena,” where he addressed Rep. Ro Khanna’s (D-CA) assertion that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is making a comeback in the 2026 midterms. When asked if Democrats should avoid culture war issues that dominated the 2024 election, Beshear emphasized the importance of standing by one’s convictions.

“I think you need to stand up for your convictions,” Beshear said. “I’m the Gov. of Kentucky. I vetoed every anti-LGBTQ+ bill, I vetoed anti-choice bills that have come to my desk, and I still have a 60-plus percent approval rating in my state.” He added that his focus remains on economic and everyday concerns, rather than divisive social issues.

Beshear explained that his administration prioritizes issues that impact the majority of Kentuckians, such as job creation, healthcare access, infrastructure, and community safety. “The reason is that I spend 80 percent of my time on things that matter to 100 percent of people in my state,” he said. “They might disagree with me on this or that social issue, but they know the vast majority of my time, again, is about good jobs. It’s about their next doctor’s appointment, the roads and bridges they drive, the education our kids are getting, and whether people are safe in their communities.” He concluded by highlighting that people mainly want focus and stability in their lives.

Beshear’s comments underscore a broader debate within the Democratic Party about how to balance social issues with economic priorities as the 2026 midterms approach. While some, like Khanna, are pushing for a renewed emphasis on DEI, others, like Beshear, argue that focusing on tangible, everyday concerns is more effective in maintaining public support.
