Congresswoman Lauren Boebert’s campaign is pushing for a recount in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, citing “very unusual voting patterns” in the razor-thin race against Democrat Eileen Laubacher. Campaign attorney Scott Gessler, a former Colorado secretary of state, announced the investigation in a sharply worded statement, emphasizing the need to ensure every legal vote is counted accurately.

“A significant number of votes remain outstanding in the race. We are fighting for every vote and will continue to ensure every legal vote is counted,” Gessler said. He added that ballot returns have been trending in Boebert’s favor, consistently lowering the margin under one percentage point. The campaign, however, did not specify the nature of the irregularities under investigation or provide evidence of any illegal votes.

Despite Laubacher’s narrow lead, the margin remains outside the automatic recount threshold under Colorado law, which requires a recount when the gap between the top two candidates is no greater than 0.5% of the leading candidate’s vote total. Gessler stressed that the campaign intends to keep scrutinizing the election process to protect its integrity and ensure Coloradans can have complete confidence in the results.

The race has been an unexpected challenge for Boebert, a Republican who previously carried the district by more than 18 percentage points in 2024. Laubacher, a retired Navy rear admiral and former National Security Council official, has stunned Republicans with her strong showing. By Thursday afternoon, Laubacher led Boebert by 2,276 votes, but later unofficial results showed her lead widening again.

As the race continues to unfold, the campaign’s legal team remains focused on ensuring transparency and accuracy in the vote count. With the possibility of a recount looming, the outcome of this tight contest could have significant implications for the future of the district and the broader political landscape.
