At least 100 protesters stormed a Microsoft data center construction site in Amsterdam on Friday, flying a ‘Fuck AI’ banner and chanting ‘Free Palestine’ as part of a broader movement against AI expansion. The incident, reported by Reuters, took place just outside the Dutch capital and marked a significant escalation in opposition to the project.
Protesters Scale Crane, Unfold Banners
According to The Verge, some protesters scaled a crane to display the ‘Fuck AI’ banner, while others unfurled a ‘Microsoft powers genocide’ banner on the construction site. The group also chanted ‘Microsoft has got to go’ and ‘Free Palestine,’ reflecting a mix of anti-technology and pro-Palestinian sentiments.
Part of Broader Global Opposition to AI
The protest was co-organized by members of the Geef Tegengas group, highlighting the growing global resistance to AI data centers. This opposition has intensified in recent months, with recent polling showing a strong majority of Americans oppose AI data centers in their local area.
Amsterdam’s Data Center Ban and Microsoft’s Project
The facility, being built by British developer Pure Data Centres, is continuing under plans dating back to 2016, despite a city-wide ban on additional data centers until 2030. Critics argue the project has found ways around some regulations, raising concerns about environmental and community impacts.
Global Resistance to AI Expansion
Amsterdam’s protest comes as voters in the U.S. also pushed back against the growth of data centers. In the first half of this year alone, opponents of AI data center construction have blocked or delayed a record number of projects worth nearly $130 billion.
Microsoft Faces Wider Protests
Microsoft has been the target of additional protests beyond the Amsterdam incident, including disruptions at its 50th anniversary party and during its Build developer conference. The company also fired two employees who had occupied its president’s office in protest.
