Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, was discharged from the hospital on Friday after suffering a stroke last week, according to his office. The incident occurred during his son’s hockey game on Friday, when Murphy experienced numbness in his arm and was taken to a local hospital. He was later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” said Allison Herwitt, his chief of staff, in a statement. “He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt added.

Dr. Jose Murphy Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, confirmed that Murphy experienced a small hemorrhagic stroke. “He has shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation,” Suarez stated.

“I will be spending several weeks at a rehabilitation center after being discharged from the hospital today,” Murphy said in a statement. “As I’m working towards a full recovery, I am staying engaged with my team and colleagues remotely, and my staff continues to carry out our legislative priorities, serve constituents, and ensure the work of my office continues uninterrupted,” he added.

Senator Murphy announced that he will miss the next several weeks of votes in the Senate. Despite his absence, his office assured that legislative work would continue without interruption.
