As Paramount Pictures moves closer to acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN staff are reportedly experiencing significant anxiety, with some describing the situation as a ‘bloodbath’ and the newsroom as ‘like a funeral.’ The looming merger has sparked fears of job cuts, changes in editorial direction, and potential political shifts within the network.

Paramount Clears Major Merger Hurdle

Paramount has reportedly reached an agreement with 12 state attorneys-general, clearing a major hurdle in its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. This deal paves the way for the creation of a massive media conglomerate that will include CBS News, CNN, and Hollywood studios such as Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros., along with streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+.

Fear and Loathing at CNN

CNN employees have been expressing concerns since June, with some reportedly turning their boss’s office into a makeshift ‘psychiatrist’s couch’ to voice their worries. The fear stems from concerns over Paramount CEO David Ellison’s ties to former President Donald Trump, as well as his father, Larry Ellison, who is a major Trump donor.

Staffers worry that under Paramount’s control, CNN might shift its editorial direction to align with more conservative viewpoints. These fears have now materialized as the merger is set to proceed, with Paramount anticipating at least $6 billion in cost savings, which could result in thousands of job losses.

Leadership Steps In to Address Concerns

CNN’s leadership, including executive Amy Entelis, has been approached by worried employees, and now, CNN boss Mark Thompson is set to hold a town hall meeting to address the concerns of distressed staff. This meeting is expected to provide some reassurance to the team amid the uncertainty of the merger.
