Trump Predicts Deal with Cuba, Cites 'Failed State' Pressure

2 min read

President Donald Trump expressed optimism that the United States and Cuba could reach a deal instead of resorting to military action, following his comments at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that prompted the Cuban delegation to walk out. During a press briefing on Saturday, Trump stated, ‘I would say that Cuba and the U.S. will make a deal. I don’t think we’ll need the military. Cuba is failing very badly. We want to help Cuba. We want to open Cuba up to our people.’

Opening Cuba to American Citizens

Trump emphasized that opening Cuba to American citizens would benefit ‘great Cuban Americans that want to go back.’ However, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba maintains that tourism to Cuba remains prohibited under long-standing economic sanctions. Americans can travel to Cuba under specific conditions, with licenses available for 12 categories of travel.

Pressure on Cuba’s Communist Regime

Trump’s remarks echoed his earlier criticism of Cuba at the United Nations meeting in New York, where he stated, ‘My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under great pressure – the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under. It’s an absolutely failed state. It’s failing like never before, and it will fall.’

Denouncing Cuba’s Communist Influence

Trump also condemned Cuba’s promotion of Marxism, citing increased anti-communism statements in recent months. He claimed, ‘The Cuban regime has also spent decades coordinating with the left-wing radicals and communist networks here in the United States. As our State Department has detailed, they’ve cultivated ties to subversive and radical groups such as the Communist Party USA, Antifa and the Dumocrat Socialists of America.’

State Department Report on Cuba’s Influence

The Department of State published a report in July detailing Cuba’s influence over left-wing and communist extremism in the United States. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose parents were Cuban immigrants, stated, ‘For more than six decades, the Cuban regime has been the leading sponsor of radical leftism and Third Worldism in the United States.’
