Tennessee State Rep. Justin J. Pearson (D) conceded his race for the 9th Congressional District on Wednesday after losing to Republican State Sen. Brent Taylor following the midterm elections. Taylor received approximately 2,500 more votes than Pearson, according to the Tennessee Outlook.
Political Shift in Memphis
For the first time in decades, Memphis will be represented in Washington by a Republican, as redistricting split the city into three districts, all of which were won by Republicans on Tuesday. Pearson, who has been vocal about his opposition to the GOP, claimed in 2023 that Republicans in his State House were trying to turn democracy into ‘mob rules.’ He also labeled President Donald Trump a ‘white supremacist domestic terrorist’ and called him the ‘biggest white supremacist in the United States.’
During his watch party, Taylor highlighted the Democrats’ determination to hold onto the seat, stating, ‘Democrats did not want to give that seat up.’ He also acknowledged the hard work of both candidates, noting, ‘I believe the voters in this case chose correctly. They chose confidence over chaos.’
Concession and Reflection
In his statement, Pearson accepted the election results but expressed concerns about ‘rigged maps,’ ‘attacks on democracy,’ and ‘billionaire control of our political system.’ Taylor, on the other hand, focused on his plans for the district, referencing David Crockett’s legacy and vowing to fight for Tennesseans. He emphasized his commitment to lowering costs and opposing policies that increase energy and grocery prices.
Meanwhile, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) won the gubernatorial race against Memphis Councilwoman Jerri Green (D). The midterms marked a significant shift in Tennessee’s political landscape, with Republicans securing key seats and reshaping the state’s representation in Washington.
