Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti has accused ESPN and the College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee of showing bias in favor of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in its recent rankings. On his weekly radio show, Cignetti criticized the network’s analysts, claiming they are instructed to follow a company line that favors the SEC, even though they are not officially paid by the network.

SEC Dominance in Rankings Sparks Debate

Cignetti pointed out that the SEC received significant support from ESPN, with analysts and writers aligned with the network’s narrative, even if they are not formally employed by it. This, he argued, explains why multiple SEC teams ranked highly in the CFP’s first weekly rankings, while some Big Ten teams with similar records did not fare as well.

The CFP committee gave ten SEC teams top-25 rankings, compared to only six from the Big Ten, where Cignetti’s Indiana Hoosiers compete. While the SEC has performed better overall this season, the real controversy lies in how teams from the conference are ranked. For instance, Alabama, a two-loss SEC team, ranked fifth, and Texas, also a two-loss SEC team, placed seventh. Meanwhile, Ohio State, a Big Ten team that lost to only one unranked opponent, was excluded from the playoff entirely after a tough game against USC without their starting quarterback.

Indiana’s Ranking Raises Questions

Despite the SEC’s dominance, Cignetti’s own team, Indiana, is ranked fourth in the CFP rankings. However, the Hoosiers have had a challenging season, needing overtime to beat two unranked teams and barely escaping the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who are on the verge of firing their head coach. The team also benched its starting quarterback due to offensive struggles, with only wide receiver Nick Marsh receiving national recognition.
