During an episode of HBO’s Real Time, comedian and political commentator Bill Maher criticized the U.S. education system for its failure to teach young people about the historical failures of socialism and communism. In an online segment titled Overtime, Maher argued that the lack of historical knowledge among younger generations is due to a lack of proper education.
Education System Fails to Teach Historical Context
Maher said that the reason many young people are unaware of the failures of socialism and communism is because these topics are not adequately covered in schools. He pointed out that while there is already a significant amount of socialism in the United States—such as Medicare, Social Security, and the Marine Corps—many people misunderstand what socialism actually entails.
“Socialism is anything the government does that the private sector doesn’t. You just read what they say in their manifesto, they want the government to take over everything. That is a prescription for failure,” Maher said. He added that this ignorance is not due to a lack of information but rather a failure in the educational system.
Calling for a More Informed Public
Maher emphasized that the current generation of young people believes they were “delivered down here on earth” without any historical context. He argued that this lack of awareness is a major problem, as it leaves them unprepared for the political and economic realities of the world.
“The reason why they don’t know that socialism didn’t work in the past, to this degree, or Communism, is because nobody taught them in school,” he said. Maher’s comments highlight a growing concern about the role of education in shaping public understanding of political ideologies and their real-world consequences.
While Maher’s remarks are critical of the current education system, they also reflect a broader debate about the role of history in shaping political awareness. As more people become engaged in political discourse, the need for an informed citizenry has never been more important.
