Maverick Lyon, a 21-year-old lacrosse player at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, was taken hostage by his own brother, Dakota, in Albany, Oregon, on January 6, 2026. According to KPTV, Dakota had allegedly relapsed on drugs and was behaving dangerously. During the hostage situation, Maverick grabbed a knife to protect himself from his brother. When he saw officers outside, he attempted to escape, but police allegedly opened fire on him as he exited the home.
Video Shows Police Shooting Amid Hostage Situation
Video footage from the scene shows Maverick exiting the home as officers yell, ‘Drop it.’ As he falls to the ground, the knife drops from his hand. Multiple officers can be heard shouting, ‘Drop the knife.’ Maverick is also heard saying, ‘You guys shot the wrong guy,’ according to KVAL.
Lawsuit Alleges Misuse of Force by Officers
Maverick has filed a lawsuit against two officers, the City of Albany, Benton County, and a county probation officer. The lawsuit claims that Maverick dropped the knife and extended his hands before officers opened fire, shooting him at least five times. It also alleges that an officer continued firing at him even after he was on the ground.
Prosecution Supports Police Use of Force
The Benton County District Attorney’s Office has stated that Maverick was still dropping the knife as he exited the home, supporting the officers’ use of force. This case has sparked debate about the appropriate response to dangerous situations and the use of lethal force by law enforcement.
