First Lady Melania Trump has partnered with Louisiana State University (LSU) to establish a $7.2 million permanent endowment fund to support Fostering the Future scholarships for students who were previously in foster care. The initiative aims to provide educational opportunities to a demographic historically underserved in higher education, with only 3% of foster care youth earning college degrees.
On Saturday, Trump traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to attend the LSU vs. University of Alabama NCAA football game. Both schools are partners of the Fostering the Future initiative and have committed to providing opportunities to foster care youth.
During her appearance in Tiger Stadium, the first lady highlighted MMR Group — the largest privately-owned electrical and instrumentation contractor in the U.S., based in Baton Rouge — for its $5 million commitment to the scholarship program. She thanked LSU Foundation donors for additional contributions that “will create opportunities for Baton Rouge for many generations.”
“When I started Fostering the Future in 2021, my vision was clear: every young person from foster care should have the chance to build an extraordinary life. Education is the center of that plan,” Trump stated. “A great education does more than prepare someone for work life. It gives something no one can ever take away. There is nothing more powerful we can give a young person than a world-class education.”
She continued, “As adults, we have a moral obligation to our children, especially those in foster care. But, as you know, we must act to truly make a difference.”
Trump also recognized the 14 Fostering the Future scholars at LSU and nine currently studying at Alabama, noting that 26 universities across the country are supporting 100 Fostering the Future students this semester.
“To the Fostering the Future scholars here today, and throughout America: I see you. I believe in you. And I will keep working to create new opportunities with you. Explore the programs, scholarships, and resources we have created, and make the most of them. You can control your own destiny now,” her remarks concluded.
LSU President Wade Rousse presented Trump with an LSU football helmet bearing the Be Best: Fostering the Future logo that matched the helmets the players went on to wear during the game. The school’s mascot, Mike the Tiger, brought the helmet to the first lady while wearing a Be Best-branded T-shirt. She also received a branded LSU football jersey with “MELANIA” spelled across the back and the number 14 to represent the school’s Fostering the Future students.
She was also gifted a custom football designed by an LSU alumnus.
